Members of the Society’s Creative Community in Critical Care are aware of the importance of working as a team with fellow critical care colleagues, other organizations and Society staff to accomplish and sustain goals. This Creative Community includes diverse individuals from all corners of the world who enjoy incorporating new ideas and perspectives to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Volunteers in the Creative Community in Critical Care embrace new technology and ideas in the profession and strive to communicate new information to the entire SCCM membership, as well as utilizing SCCM Connect to communicate and reach goals.
The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) contains a large structure of Creative Communities (committees, workgroups, task forces) comprised of members who volunteer their time and expertise to further the goals and missions of SCCM.
If you are interested in applying to an SCCM Creative Community, please complete and submit an application by May 1st. You can use the application to apply for up to three (3) Creative Communities per year. Creative Community term duration is three (3) years unless otherwise noted.
Committee appointments are made each September for the following year. Once appointed to a committee, the Volunteer Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest, Assignment of Rights, and Disclosure Policy must be completed.
As you volunteer your time as part of our Creative Community in Critical Care, you assist the Society in developing programs and identifying innovative educational projects that benefit all critical care professionals and the patients they serve.
Q: What is the Creative Community for Critical Care (4C)?
A: The Creative Community for Critical Care is SCCM's body of volunteer members.
Q: How do I become a member of the Creative Community for Critical Care (4C)?
A: To become a member of the Creative Community, you must complete a committee application, which is located on the SCCM Web site, and sign a conflict of interest form.
Q: Why do I need to sign the conflict of interest form?
A: Increased scrutiny by regulating bodies necessitates the need for SCCM to be transparent in its programming efforts and any conflict, real or perceived, needs to be managed.
Q: How does a committee get started?
A: A committee gets started when the SCCM President, Executive Committee or Council determines that an organized group of SCCM members should study a particular issue or implement a project.
Q: How does the committee interface with the Society?
A: The committee chair prepares an annual report to Council. Any issues, questions, concerns, or action items can be taken to leadership via these reports or through the assigned Council Liaison or staff partner. Critical Connections and the SCCM Web site may also be used as a resource to inform the membership.
Q: What is the role of the Council Liaison?
A: The Council Liaison is an information and procedure resource for the committee chair. The Council Liaison should be kept informed of committee activities throughout the year.
Q: What is the role of the staff partner?
A: The staff partner is also a valuable resource, offering the knowledge and expertise to direct the committee and to offer support as needed.
Q: Who appoints the committee Vice-chair and its members?
A: The President-elect appoints the Vice-chair who will then move up to chair the committee the following year. The President-elect may utilize recommendations from the Executive Committee, committee chair and staff partner.
Q: How often does the committee meet?
A: Most committees meet annually at a face-to-face meeting during the Annual Congress and the remainder of the committee’s interaction is done electronically or via conference calls. Occasionally, a committee, task force or subcommittee may be asked to attend additional meetings. These meetings must be pre-approved by the Executive Vice President/CEO, Executive Committee or staff partner.
Q: How are arrangements and agendas for the meeting at the Congress handled?
A: The staff partner will contact the chair to determine possible dates/times for the meeting and the length of time and set-up required. The staff partner will also assist with preparing the agenda and sending meeting notices to the committee members.
Q: How are intercommittee communications and conference calls arranged?
A: The staff partner will implement these functions.
Q: How long is the term of a committee appointment?
A: Most committee terms are for three years, but occasionally an individual is appointed to a one- or two-year term so as to maintain the structure of the committee.
Q: Can I reapply to the same committee?
A: Yes. Committee members are eligible to serve two terms or six years, whichever is less, unless they advance to the Vice-chair position.
Q: Why was I not reappointed to the committee I served on previously?
A: If you were not reappointed to the committee, it is usually because you have served your two-term limit or you did not reapply for a second term, as appointments and reappointments are not automatic.
Q: Why was I not appointed to the committee for which I applied?
A: SCCM is fortunate to have dedicated members who are interested and willing to volunteer. As there are a limited number of slots and a finite number of committees, we are not always able to place members on the committee of their choice.
