Cancellation Policy 

Registrants may be eligible for refunds of activities at SCCM’s discretion. If you have not accessed the activity’s materials, have not completed a significant portion of the activity, and/or the content does not meet your needs, you may be eligible for a refund. A registrant’s cancellation of an in-person activity may incur a fee, at SCCM’s discretion. To reschedule an in-person activity, please contact SCCM Customer Service at least 30 days before the activity. If SCCM cannot hold an activity as intended, SCCM shall not be liable for any costs, expenses, or fees related to cancellation of travel and attendance associated with the event.

Why should you submit a proposal?

  • Gain feedback and resources to support your innovation or current venture
  • Build powerful new partnerships to accelerate your idea from concept to bedside
  • Increase your visibility in the critical care space

General Criteria
Submit ideas and active projects for potential commercialization to improve care for critically ill or injured patients. There are no restrictions on stage of development.

Pitch Proposal Details
Topics: Innovations that align with the following topic areas of interest will be considered:

  • Hypothermia Prevention and Circulation: Early treatments and devices to prevent trauma-induced hypothermia and enhance circulation.
  • Rapid Bleeding Control: Interventions and technologies for immediate hemorrhage management.
  • Portable Oxygen Solutions: Safe, effective, medical-grade portable oxygen generation systems.
  • Blood-Based Resuscitation: Enhanced blood substitutes for immediate life-saving resuscitation.
  • Sterile Surgical Instruments: Rapid solutions to deliver sterile surgical tools in resource-limited environments.
  • Traumatic Wound and Burn Recovery:
    • Tools for rapid and accurate burn injury assessment.
    • Optimized burn and wound care techniques for austere settings.
  • Complex Injury Treatment: Pre-hospital tools for managing combined and multi-system organ injuries.
  • Semi-Autonomous Procedural Support: AI/robotic technologies for efficient, accurate resuscitative procedures, including venous/arterial access and regional analgesia.
  • Autonomous Care and Evacuation: AI/ML-driven solutions for optimizing treatment, triage, and casualty management using dynamic monitoring and integration with existing DoD field medic platforms (e.g., BATDOK, MEDCOP).
  • Hemorrhagic Shock Therapeutics: Drugs addressing metabolic acidosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and trauma-induced coagulopathy, with a focus on repurposing existing pharmaceuticals.
  • Acute Pain Management: Novel analgesics and anesthetics for battlefield pain, minimizing side effects, and preserving cardiovascular/respiratory function.

Format: The top three pitches will be selected to present a live five-minute pitch during the course to attendees and a panel of judges. The judges will then vote to determine which finalist will receive the award.

Benefits: Selected pitch submitters will showcase their ideas to a diverse audience of industry leaders, clinicians, and investors, fostering collaborations and support for further development. The winning pitch will receive $5,000.

Selection Criteria
Relevance to critical care innovation and MTEC topic area of interest that impact patient outcomes, novelty of the idea, and feasibility.  

Submission Requirements
You must register to attend the event to be selected to present your pitch. You do not need to be an SCCM member to submit.  Address the following areas in your proposal:

  • Description of the technology, idea, or innovation
  • What problem does this technology, idea, or innovation solve?
  • What need does this technology, idea, or innovation address?

Awards

Selected pitch submitters will showcase their ideas to a diverse audience of industry leaders, clinicians, and investors, fostering collaborations and support for further development. The winning pitch will receive $10,000.

Accepted posters will be featured prominently, providing presenters with visibility among attendees, potential collaborators, and investors interested in advancing critical care innovations. Posters will be voted on by attendees and a judging panel. The awards for posters are as follows:

  • The highest-rated poster will be awarded $5,000.
  • The highest-rated poster relating to patient safety will be awarded $2,000.
  • If a patient safety poster is rated the highest overall, it will be awarded $7,000.

 The patient safety poster award is sponsored by the Patient Safety Technology Challenge.

About the Patient Safety Technology Challenge
The Patient Safety Technology Challenge is an initiative administered by the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and funded by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and designed to fuel the engagement of students and innovators in creating solutions and envisioning transformational approaches to reduce preventable harm from medical errors. The initiative will inject patient safety awards and prizes into existing local, regional, and national competitions and produce a documentary to help increase awareness of the patient safety crisis and to support budding tech-enabled patient safety solutions.

Guided by national partners experienced in safety technology and advanced healthcare analytics, the Challenge funds awards to organizers of existing events, from hackathons to start-up weekends. Learn more.
