SCCM Specialty Sections

Anesthesiology Section

The Anesthesiology Section aims to provide preeminent leadership, collaboration, and education to all members of the multiprofessional critical care team interested in anesthesiology.

Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology Section

The purpose of the Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology (CPP) Section is to further the education and promote the interests of SCCM members who have special interest and maintain activity in CPP. The section’s mission is to provide preeminent pharmacy leadership and collaboration in critical care practice, education, and research.

Emergency Medicine Section

The Emergency Medicine Section promotes the interests of emergency medicine in the critical care field, encouraging collaboration, education, and research activities. The section is open to all emergency medicine professionals and provides excellent opportunities to network with colleagues, influence the profession, and develop members’ leadership skills.

Industry and Technology Section

The Industry and Technology Section envisions a network of critical care business and medicine representatives working to educate each other in their respective disciplines and to provide a platform for technology creation and appreciation.

Internal Medicine Section

Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that diagnoses and non-surgically treats diseases affecting the internal organs of the body. The Internal Medicine Section provides a forum for discussion and action on issues of importance to internal medicine intensivists.

In-Training Section

The In-Training Section aims to further develop and foster trainees and early-career faculty in their transition from student to professional practice. The section welcomes all healthcare professionals represented in the critical care field.

Neuroscience Section

The Neuroscience Section educates and promotes the multiprofessional practice of critical care medicine by members who share an interest in neuroscience injuries and neurologic manifestations of critical illness. The section is open to all specialties and disciplines, providing members with the opportunity to network with critical care colleagues, influence the neuroscience profession, and strengthen leadership skills.

Nursing Section

The purpose of the Nursing Section is to further the education and promote the interest of Society members who have special interests and maintain activity as nurses and other healthcare professionals in critical care. The section is composed of nurses and other healthcare professionals from diverse clinical, administrative, educational, and research roles in the field of critical care.

Osteopathic Medicine Section

Osteopathic medicine is a system of medicine based on the theory that disturbances in the musculoskeletal system affect other bodily parts and cause disorders that can be corrected by techniques used in conjunction with therapeutic procedures. The osteopathic philosophy embodies a whole-person approach to healthcare, which recognizes the interconnectedness of the body and that manual techniques can assist in restoring optimal health. The goal of the section is to support research and educate the Society on matters pertaining to osteopathic medicine and the practice of multiprofessional critical care medicine.

Pediatrics Section

The purpose of the Pediatrics Section is to foster the care of critically ill or injured children and to ensure that these patients and their healthcare professionals have a voice within the Society. The section contains a diverse group of professionals whose mission is to improve the care of critically ill infants, children, and adolescents by providing multiprofessional research, education, and clinical care.

Physician Assistant Section

The Physician Assistant (PA) Section aims to provide a network of PAs who practice and are deeply committed to critical care medicine, to further education and foster the multiprofessional practice of critical care medicine by PAs, and to advise the Society on matters pertaining to PAs.

Research Section

The Research Section promotes and supports a multiprofessional model of basic, translational, and clinical research to ensure optimal outcomes for all critically ill patients. The section aims to support research development of Society members and promote communication among Society members regarding research, research opportunities, and networks.

Respiratory Care Section

The Respiratory Care Section aims to provide support to the Society and section members through research and education in the areas of clinical, scientific, and technical aspects of patient care. The section welcomes members of the healthcare team who are committed to providing specialized respiratory critical care.

Surgery Section

The Surgery Section focuses on the training and practice of surgical critical care and is composed of surgeons who are interested in the comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with critical surgical illnesses.

Telecritical Care Medicine Section

The Telecritical Care Medicine Section promotes discussion, collaboration, and networking with SCCM members who have an interest in telecritical care.

Uniformed Services Section

The Uniformed Services Section provides a forum for military critical care professionals to discuss matters of mutual concern. The section represents the five branches of the United States military within the field of critical care medicine.
