As the humanitarian emergency has unfolded in Ukraine, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has deployed support to critical care clinicians and patients. SCCM’s efforts often begin with urgent crisis response and evolve into long-term partnerships focused on training, education, and improving patient outcomes.

SCCM Training Missions

August 2025

Eleven Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) volunteers returned to Lviv, Ukraine in August, training 200 clinicians through Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS): Pediatrics, FCCS: Obstetrics, and FCCS: Surgical courses. These courses combined lectures and hands-on skills to help clinicians manage critically ill patients during the first 24 hours.

August and September 2023

SCCM held free training courses that combine elements of its ICU Liberation and Fundamental Critical Care Support: Surgical courses in Lviv, Ukraine, August 30 to September 7, 2023. Up to 300 healthcare clinicians were trained to support patients after surgical care in the ICU to begin recovery and rehabilitation.

SCCM also held additional free advanced ultrasound training courses September 8 and 9, 2023, to provide point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training focused on skills to quickly diagnose and care for critically ill and injured patients. These courses were a continuation of the courses held in March 2023.

March 2023

Members of SCCM traveled from the United States to Lviv, Ukraine in March 2023 to train more than 140 clinicians on lifesaving critical care ultrasound. Learning and using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills allows Ukrainian medical professionals to quickly diagnose and care for critically ill and injured patients—all the more important as injuries continue to mount in the ongoing Ukrainian humanitarian crisis.
