SCCM's Mission on Display

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Annual Report provides an overview of activities from October 2023 to September 2024. It has been an exciting year full of new milestones and accomplishments.

As we look back at the 53 years since SCCM was founded, we are pleased to report that the Society is robust and doing more than ever to improve the care of critically ill and injured patients worldwide.

We are living through a time of historic challenge and opportunity. We have entered a new age of AI technology that may fundamentally transform patient care. The number of clinicians working in ICUs has declined as many, frustrated and exhausted, have left the field, resulting in an acute shortage of clinicians and increasing patients’ vulnerability.

This annual report demonstrates how SCCM’s programs are thriving overall as it seeks to address these challenges. SCCM's traditional major activities such as educational programs for trained critical care clinicians, which were heavily impacted during the pandemic, continue to recover. The growth of newer activities, such as the Society’s research and humanitarian programs that flourished during the pandemic, continue to grow during this period of transition.
