Medical research funding has evolved over the past few decades, with private sources of funding outpacing government funding by a wide margin. Additionally, commercially funded early-stage research has declined in favor of medical devices, bioengineered drugs, and later-stage clinical trials.
Industry-sponsored research has traditionally been considered contextually different from government-funded research by academic medical centers due to different or nonexistent incentive structures within academia for industry-sponsored trialists, as well as perceptions of conflict of interest. Industry-sponsored studies are typically more restrictive and involve research questions that are predetermined and in line with the commercial entity’s interests rather than the trialist’s.
However, many clinical researchers find industry-sponsored research to be feasible and rewarding. Clinician-scientists can often find privately funded trials that align with their interests and can benefit from participating in multiple trials surrounding a common theme.
This unique webcast will feature stakeholders from academia and industry who will share their perspectives and explore issues surrounding industry-sponsored research.
