Functional biomarkers are transforming the landscape of critical care research by enabling more precise patient selection, real-time monitoring, and adaptive trial design. This free interactive roundtable will explore how biomarkers—ranging from biochemical indicators to imaging and physiologic measures—can be used to identify patient subgroups, monitor treatment response, and enrich clinical trial populations.

Experts will discuss how these tools are being applied in conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis to uncover heterogeneity of treatment effect, improve trial efficiency, and accelerate the development of targeted therapies.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into how functional biomarkers support personalized medicine and improve outcomes in critically ill patients. The session will conclude with a live Q&A, offering participants the opportunity to engage directly with the expert panel.

Practice Gaps Addressed

Despite growing evidence supporting the use of functional biomarkers in critical care trials, many clinicians and researchers are unfamiliar with how to apply them effectively for patient stratification and trial enrichment. This roundtable addresses the need for greater awareness and understanding of biomarker types, their clinical utility, and their role in optimizing trial design and execution.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the role of functional biomarkers in critical care trial enrollment
  • Differentiate between types of functional biomarkers and their clinical applications
  • Evaluate how functional biomarkers can be leveraged to enrich clinical trial populations and improve trial outcomes
