Become an Instructor, Director, or Consultant

Understand the criteria for becoming an instructor, director, or consultant for one of SCCM’s many hosted training opportunities.

Hosted training opportunities are delivered by institutions through the work of qualified instructors, directors, and consultants. Each of these educational roles has specific responsibilities and eligibility requirements, which are outlined below.

Instructor Responsibilities and Pathway

Instructor Responsibilities

  • Give presentations or guide skill stations/scenarios, as assigned by the director
  • Review assigned materials beforehand and come prepared
  • Encourage audience participation
  • Adjust teaching style to learners as needed
  • Follow material without inserting personal bias

Instructor Pathway

  • Meet eligibility requirements
  • Complete hosted training with a posttest score ≥ 80% within the past four years
  • Complete instructor curriculum or train-the-trainer session
  • Submit application and supporting documents
  • Teach at least two hosted training components within two years of instructor application approval
Director Responsibilities and Pathway

Director Responsiblities

  • Plan, organize, and conduct the hosted training
  • Ensure that the hosted training quality meets SCCM standards
  • Identify and invite faculty
  • Organize hosted training logistics and secure equipment
  • Establish learner registration process
  • Distribute hosted training materials
  • Arrange continuing education/accredited continuing education credits for in-person training (if desired)
  • Mentor and guide instructors and coordinators
  • Promote collegiality, camaraderie, and communication among all instructors
  • Complete a hosted training site evaluation
  • Provide feedback to the SCCM committee charged with the hosted training if requested

Director Pathway

  • Must be a current SCCM-approved instructor
  • Direct a hosted training with an SCCM-approved consultant
  • Obtain a letter of recommendation from the observing consultant
  • Submit application and supporting documents
Consultant Responsibilities and Pathway

Consultant Responsibilities

  • Mentor and guide first-time hosted training directors and coordinators through regular communications during planning
  • Attend at least one day of the hosted training (on invitation)
  • Assess the abilities and skills of first-time directors to determine whether they should be permitted to direct hosted training without consultant supervision going forward
  • Debrief with the director and coordinator after the hosted training to help evaluate how it was run, discuss issues and concerns, and finalize the relationship
  • Provide feedback to the SCCM committee charged with the hosted training

Consultant Pathway

  • Must be a current SCCM-approved director
  • Must be a current SCCM member
  • Submit application and supporting documents

Note: Instructor, director, and consultant status are maintained by maintaining eligibility requirements and teaching in or directing at least one hosted course every two years.

 
Fundamental Critical Care Support

Who is eligible?
Critical care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists

Note: Once an individual is an-SCCM approved instructor for one Fundamentals course, he/she can become an instructor for another Fundamentals course by completing that course and submitting an instructor application for that course.

Physician

  • Critical care certification or activity or board eligibility for certification or
  • A minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Advanced Practice Provider

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with critical care certification or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Nurse

  • Baccalaureate degree with critical care certification or
  • Graduate or higher degree, as well as a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Respiratory Therapist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Pharmacist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree or specialty in critical care or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

The practice requirement ensures (as much as possible) that the instructor will be comfortable with the majority of the lecture components and skill stations and can answer questions with credibility. Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support

Who is eligible?
Critical care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists

Nurse

  • Baccalaureate degree with critical care certification or

Respiratory Therapist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Pharmacist

  • Critical care certification or activity or board eligibility for certification or
  • A minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator* or
  • Obstetrics/gynecology board certification or board eligibility for certification, as well at least 50% clinical practice and labor and delivery management as confirmed by a department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator**

Advanced Practice Provider

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with critical care certification or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator* or
  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with obstetrics/gynecology certification, as well as clinical practice and labor delivery management from a department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator**

Nurse

  • Baccalaureate degree with critical care certification or
  • Graduate or higher degree, as well as a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator* or
  • Baccalaureate degree with obstetrics/gynecology certification, as well as clinical practice and labor and delivery management as confirmed by a department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator** or
    Graduate or higher degree with obstetrics/gynecology certification, as well as clinical practice and labor and delivery management as confirmed by a department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator**

Respiratory Therapist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Pharmacist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree or specialty in critical care or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

**Clinical practice and labor and delivery management refers to the management of pregnant patients, including inpatient management of labor, performance of deliveries, and care of the postpartum patient. Critical care-certified practitioners will be accredited as instructors on successful completion of all criteria listed in this document. Instructor applicants with less than 50% critical care practice ratio requirement may require a review before instructor status is granted.

Fundamental Critical Care Support: Resource Limited

Who is eligible?
Critical care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists

Note: Once an individual is an-SCCM approved instructor for one Fundamentals course, he/she can become an instructor for another Fundamentals course by completing that course and submitting an instructor application for that course.

Physician

  • Critical care certification or activity or board eligibility for certification or
  • A minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Advanced Practice Provider

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with critical care certification or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Nurse

  • Baccalaureate degree with critical care certification or
  • Graduate or higher degree, as well as a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Respiratory Therapist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Pharmacist

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree or specialty in critical care or a minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Special Operations Combat Medic (18D), Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P), 
 or Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B)

  • Prehospital medic (certification required) with resuscitative medicine experience in a resource-limited area such as wilderness medicine, overseas medicine in a low-economic or war-torn country. Recommendation letter of an FCCS: Resources Limited director or consultant required to substantiate applicant’s resource-limited care experience.
  • Prehospital medics are not eligible to become FCCS: Resource Limited directors or consultants.

Critical care board-certified physicians, doctors of osteopathic medicine, and advanced practice providers.

Advanced Practice Provider

  • Baccalaureate or higher degree with critical care certification or

Airway and Mechanical Ventilation Management

Who is eligible?

Critical care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists who have two or more years of experience with airway and mechanical ventilation use integrated in daily clinical practice.

  • A minimum 50% critical care practice ratio as confirmed by an ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator*

Advanced Practice Provider

Instructor Application Supporting Documents

All Hosted Training: Confirmation of critical care practice ratio form
This form is needed with the instructor application if an instructor candidate needs to show a minimum 50% care practice ratio. It should be completed by the candidate’s ICU director, department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator.

FCCS: Obstetrics Only: Confirmation of labor and delivery practice ratio form
This form is needed with the FCCS: OB instructor application if an instructor candidate needs to show at least 50% clinical practice and labor and delivery management. It should be completed by the candidate’s department chair, division director, chief medical officer, or hospital administrator.

FCCS: Resource Limited Only: Confirmation of resuscitative medicine experience form
This form is needed with the FCCS: RL instructor application if an instructor candidate is a prehospital medic. It should be completed by an FCCS: RL director or consultant.

Ultrasound Only: Course recommendation form
Personal recommendation from a Critical Care Ultrasound director, consultant, or current or past course faculty member.

This form is required when submitting a director application and should be completed and signed by an active course consultant.

FCCS: Resource Limited Only: Prehospital medics are not eligible to become FCCS: Resource Limited directors.
