In October 2022, SCCM replaced the lengthy guideline development cycle with a new process and additional resources. In the new process, one to five patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) questions are addressed every year as either updates or new guidelines. The new process also shortens the development cycle, with a goal of 18 months from seating the panel to journal submission.

SCCM has added resources to support the guideline development process, including implementation scientists as well as professional librarians, systematic review teams, skilled methodologists, and clinical guideline practice developers to help write the manuscript.

Provide a list of potential questions the guideline will address based on the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome (PICO) format, which defines clinical questions in terms of a specific program and aids panel members in narrowing clinically relevant evidence. Please note: SCCM guidelines are restricted to no more than 5 PICO questions per guideline.
The Society of Critical Care Medicine is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a part of all its initiatives. To promote DEI in guidelines, please list a maximum of 10 potential subject matter experts (SMEs) for this guideline panel who meet the DEI criteria. DEI criteria, which specify a wide range of professionals from diverse practice settings, geographic regions, and cultural backgrounds. These SMEs need not be SCCM members to sit on the guideline panel.
