Gain beginner point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills to assist in the management of patients with cardiac arrest and sepsis through the new Introduction to Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Life Support and Sepsis course.

On completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the rationale for screening using subcostal views and limited lung views
  • Use critical care ultrasound in the management of patients in cardiac arrest without prolonging no-flow intervals
  • Incorporate qualitative critical care ultrasound into the management of patients with sepsis and septic shock (including COVID-19) based on ultrasound pattern recognition
  • Recognize signs of chronic disease, limitations, and the need for additional ultrasound techniques to support decision-making

This hands-on course focuses on acquisition of a single subcostal cardiac window and limited lung examination. High-fidelity simulation will be used to apply a protocolized approach to managing patients with cardiac arrest during pulse, rhythm, and echocardiography checks. Content includes 100 subcostal pathology clips of patients with septic shock and in-hospital cardiac arrest to demonstrate quick pattern recognition and facilitate interpretation.

Why is the subcostal view so important?

  • The subcostal view alone can provide qualitative information on ventricular function, pericardial effusion, and intravascular volume status.
  • In patients with cardiac arrest, the subcostal view is least likely to interfere with chest compressions.
  • During cardiac arrest secondary to pulseless electrical activity (PEA), the subcostal view can be used to assess the presence of cardiac muscle activity (pseudo-PEA) and underlying reversible causes of PEA.
  • Safe use of the subcostal view during cardiac arrest requires close interaction among team members. A subcostal window can also be used to rapidly recognize various hemodynamic patterns in patients with septic shock, facilitating critical decision-making.

This full-day hands-session is led by expert faculty and uses live models to provide significant experience, ensured with a low faculty-to-attendee ratio.

Target Audience
This continuing education activity is intended to meet the needs of intensivists, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, emergency physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and all other professionals who care for patients in any setting in which critical care is provided.

Designation Statement: The Society of Critical Care Medicine designates the live educational activity, Critical Care Ultrasound: Adult, for a maximum of 19 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. 

Nurses: The Critical Care Ultrasound: Adult activity has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider No. 8181, for up to 19 contact hours. 

Physician Assistants: The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 19 Category 1 credits for completing this activity.

Maintenance of Certification 
Successful completion of this continuing medical education (CME) activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 19 medical knowledge maintenance of certification (MOC) points in the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Anesthesia, and American Board of Surgery MOC programs. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the number of CME credits claimed for the activity. This course meets the requirements for MOC for up to 19 credits.
