SCCM Welcomes New Editor-In-Chief of Critical Care Explorations

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has named Tamás Szakmány, MD, PhD, MBE, FCCM, as the new editor-in-chief of Critical Care Explorations.

As of October 1, 2024, he has succeeded Timothy G. Buchman, PhD, MD, MCCM, who has served as editor-in-chief since the journal’s inception in 2019.

“As editor-in-chief, my main goals for Critical Care Explorations are to facilitate the publishing of manuscripts with novel findings and continuing to explore the boundaries of critical care medicine,” said Dr. Szakmány. “The journal promotes collaboration across various disciplines and captures diverse perspectives in critical care, and I am committed to represent the diversity and inclusivity of SCCM, with its global reach of readers and authors.”

Dr. Szakmány has been the associate editor for social media for Critical Care Explorations since 2021. He was chosen for the role of editor-in-chief for his research experience and leadership in critical care. Dr. Szakmány served as the clinical lead for the All-Wales Critical Care Network between 2014 and 2020. He was the clinical lead for the Welsh Intensive Care Information System project, which aims to digitize critical care in Wales, between 2020 and 2023. He was the specialty research lead for anaesthesia, perioperative, and pain medicine in Wales between 2015 and 2021 and has been the specialty research lead for critical care since 2022.

He is a consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board of National Health Service (NHS) Wales and an honorary professor in intensive care at Cardiff University in Cardiff, Wales. He was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2021 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A longtime member of SCCM, Dr. Szakmány was a founding member of the Society’s Social Media Task Force and Social Media Committee. He has served as a member of the Congress Planning Committee since 2019 and more recently as Congress cochair in 2024. He has also served on the Anesthesiology Section’s communications subcommittee and received SCCM Presidential Citation Awards in 2017 and 2021 through 2024.
