Ukraine Grants

Ukraine Grants

SCCM is dedicated to keeping hospitals and intensive care units operational during the Ukraine humanitarian crisis. Grant funding is available to provide financial support for healthcare facilities. Awardees will receive $50,000 in funding that may be used to purchase medical supplies, humanitarian aid, or other services.

Please contact Mark Lenhart for additional information or if you know of a hospital that could be considered for the grant.

As the humanitarian emergency has unfolded in Ukraine, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has rapidly deployed support to critical care clinicians and patients. The Society is providing medical equipment, supplies, free in-person training, and free critical care educational resources.

SCCM Training Missions

August 2023
SCCM held free training courses that combine elements of its ICU Liberation and Fundamental Critical Care Support: Surgical courses in Lviv, Ukraine, August 30 to September 7, 2023. Up to 300 healthcare clinicians were trained to support patients after surgical care in the ICU to begin recovery and rehabilitation.

SCCM also held additional free advanced ultrasound training courses September 8 and 9, 2023, to provide point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training focused on skills to quickly diagnose and care for critically ill and injured patients. These courses were a continuation of the courses held in March 2023.

March 2023
Members of SCCM traveled from the United States to Lviv, Ukraine in March 2023 to train more than 140 clinicians on lifesaving critical care ultrasound. Learning and using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills allows Ukrainian medical professionals to quickly diagnose and care for critically ill and injured patients—all the more important as injuries continue to mount in the ongoing Ukrainian humanitarian crisis.

SCCM to Lead Ultrasound Training in Ukraine
José L. Díaz-Gómez, MD, FASE, FCCM, rides his bicycle to work every day in Houston, Texas. He passes the Texas Medical Center, where he sees a large Ukrainian flag on one of the hospital buildings. The flag symbolizes support for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia, and now when Dr. Díaz-Gómez passes it, he sees something more. He sees courage, responsibility, and hope.

SCCM Member Efforts in Ukraine
Rom A. Stevens, MD, FCCM, and Robert Kerr, MD, were planning to spend this past April sailing off the west coast of Alaska. The two retired Navy captains were looking forward to a relaxing escape, ready to soak in the breathtaking scenery of the last frontier. Instead, they found themselves in war-torn Ukraine, trying desperately to aid a country being decimated by ongoing Russian invasions.
