The ICU Heroes Award recognizes that patients and families are an integral part of intensive care unit (ICU) care. The award is given to an ICU patient and family and to the multiprofessional team that delivered the care. Two awards are given: one for an adult ICU and one for a pediatric ICU.

Deadline and Submission
Applications are not being accepted for the 2021 award year.
Applicants are asked to submit a patient’s story (no more than three pages) with a focus on attention paid to patient- and family-centered aspects of care. The following criteria are considered when evaluating applications:
- Clinical details
- Principal diagnosis
- ICU course
- Hospital course
- Outpatient course
- Final outcome
- How does this patient’s course demonstrate multiprofessional care?
Criteria and Notification
Each institution and patient family receives a plaque that recognizes participation in the patient’s care and recovery. Funding for travel and registration for the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Critical Care Congress is also provided to awardees to share their stories with the SCCM membership.
