Knowledge of infectious diseases has improved dramatically, with new technologies promising to improve the ability to identify serious infections rapidly and to optimize therapy.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
  • Recognize the importance of emerging special pathogens to critical care clinicians, including their early recognition, management, and systems of care
  • Describe new rapid molecular assays for pathogen identification in the ICU and their comparative effectiveness versus culture-based methods
  • Identify the role that biomarkers such as procalcitonin can play in the early identification and management of the infected patient with critical illness
  • Explore the impact of critical illness on antimicrobial pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
