11th SCCM/ATS/ERS/ESICM/SRLF
International Consensus Conference in Intensive Care Medicine
Therapeutic Hypothermia - To Cool or Not To Cool?
April 23-24, 2009
Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Objective
The purpose of the International Consensus Conference (ICC) is to produce an informed debate on a limited subject presented in the form of five (5) main questions, with the aim of evaluating available scientific information and advancing the understanding of the topic in question. The 11th ICC, hosted by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, will explore the issue of therapeutic hypothermia. The two-day conference format allows experts from different disciplines to present the scientific evidence to answer the following five (5) questions:
- What is mild therapeutic hypothermia?
- Where is the clinical evidence supporting the use of mild therapeutic hypothermia?
- Who else might we cool?
- How should we cool? The devil is in the details!
- Why should we not cool?
Before the conference, a jury of 11 individuals who are not experts in therapeutic hypothermia will be provided with background documentation. After attending the conference and hearing the expert presentations surrounding the five questions posed, the jury will meet over two days to prepare a consensus statement on the issues raised. The consensus text may then be published by the five (5) sponsoring societies.

Brief Program Description
The therapeutic hypothermia program offers an opportunity for attendees to hear the experts explore the five questions. You will learn about the controversy related to the definition of therapeutic hypothermia, as well as hear the debate on different cooling techniques, cooling protocols, and the selection of appropriate candidates for cooling. Therapeutic hypothermia affects all systems, and presentations related to the implications of drug metabolism, coagulation, and infection management in cooled patients will stimulate thought on the use of therapeutic hypothermia in your own critical care settings.
Registration is now opened. For the full program click here.
